The Department of Economics honors our top graduating seniors during an awards reception held at the close of each spring semester. All graduating Economics majors are automatically considered for these awards.
This award is presented to students with a major in economics who have demonstrated the capacity to achieve educational and professional goals, the motivation to achieve these goals, and the initiative to seek opportunities to further their progress. In selecting the recipient(s), the Department of Economics considers overall grade-point average, grade-point average in economics classes, and the nature of the student's economics program.

Matthew DiRisio was an undergraduate assistant in both the Economics and Computer Science departments, a professorial assistant and a research assistant in the Economics Department for Professor Zhang. During his time at MSU, he received the PURI Grant for Research, was an Econ Scholar, a member of the Honors College, and an Alumni Distinguished Scholarship Commended Semifinalist. In the future, he will continue on to begin his MS in Computer Science at MSU.
Calder Moore was an Econ Scholar, an undergraduate assistant in both the Economics and Mathematics departments and a research assistant in the Economics Department for Professor Zhang. He received a PURI Grant for Research and the L.C. Plan Award in mathematics.
Sarah Pilewski was an Econ Scholar, a member of Women and Minorities in Economics and the Spartan Support Network, a research assistant in the Economics Department for Professor Zhang, and she received a PURI Grand for Research. In the future, she'll be working at Baker Tilly, LLP.
Jay Stansberry was an Econ Scholar, a member of the Honors College, a research assistant in economics with Professor Zhang, a research assistant studying the impact of diversity statements on MSU students, a recipient of a PURI Grant for Research and the Board of Trustees Award for a 4.0 GPA, and a member of Football Student Section, Izzone, and Munnsters.

Allan Kiambuthi was an Econ Scholar, the CFO for the Residence Hall Association, the President of the African Student Leadership Association, a research assistant for Lab & Development Economics. During his time at MSU, he received the International Model African Union (Washington D.C.) Outstanding Delegate Award, the Actuarial Science Award, the Board of Trustees Award (4.0 GPA), the Honors Excellence Scholarship, and the International Student Excellence Award. In the future he will be working for McKinsey & Company.
Elizabeth Pauley was a member of the Econ Scholars and the Honors College, an undergraduate assistant and a professorial assistant for the Economics Department, and a PR coordinator for the Honors College Service Club. In the future, she will join Amazon as a financial analyst.
Caroline Nielsen was an Econ Scholar and a Social Science Scholar, a community outreach coordinator for the Refugee Outreach Collective an MSU International Student Ambassador, and a research assistant in Sociology. During her time at MSU, she received the Board of Trustees Award (4.0 GPA), the Alumni Distinguished Scholarship, and the Ruth Hamilton Award (Sociology). In the future, she will be an assistant analyst for the Congressional Budget Office.
This award recognizes the Department's most outstanding graduating senior, as selected by the Undergraduate Instruction Committee. The recipient must be a Spring or Summer graduate with primary degree in Economics. The Outstanding Senior leads the processional for Economics at Spring commencement.

Sean Cottrell was a member of the Honors College and an Econ Scholar. During his time at MSU, he was an RA in both the mathematics and economics departments, and he received the Walter Adams Scholarship, the Herbert T. Graham Award in Mathematics, and was a member of the Judo Club. After graduation, he will be a RA with the MSU Wei Lab and then continue to his PhD in Applied Mathematics.
