Biography

Byron Brown joined the economics department in 1964 after receiving his A.B. in economics from Cornell University in 1960 and his Ph. D. in economics from the Johns Hopkins University in 1966.

Professor Brown’s research interest is the economics of education, with particular emphasis on the evaluation of the effects of learning technologies on student achievement. He is the author or co-author ... of three online courses in economics. Professor Brown received the 1999 Richard J. Lewis Quality of Excellence Award from the Broad College of Business for his work in online learning, and the 2004 Honors College award for distinguished contributions to Honors College students.

Professor Brown's administrative service includes appointments as assistant to the University president (1969-70) and chair of the Economics Department (1977-80). For many years he held a joint appointment as Coordinator of Instructional Technology Support in the Office of Libraries, Computing, and Technology, now known as IT Services, where he was active in organizing programs for MSU faculty wishing to use instructional technology more effectively in teaching and research.
