2014 Department of Economics Annual Newsletter

Letter from the Department Chair

Welcome to our 2014 Newsletter. As Chair, I am delighted to have this opportunity to bring you up to date on recent developments in the Department of Economics.

The value of our major has received considerable attention over the past few years, with economics showing up among lists of the fastest growing and most marketable majors in study after study. Consistent with this national trend, the Economics major has grown at MSU as well, with the number of majors doubling over the past 7 years, topping 1400 for the first time this past year. To keep up with the demand for our services, our faculty continues to expand.

Undergraduate Award Winners

About 400 economics majors graduate from Michigan State each year, and each year the department honors a small number of the most outstanding members of that group, publically acknowledging their accomplishments in a reception held at the close of the spring semester.

"Econ Scholars" Program Enters its Second Year with the Selection of a New Class of Scholars

With an inaugural cohort leading the way last year, an outstanding group of new scholars this year, and the involvement of donors, alumni, and faculty, the Economics Scholars Program is creating new opportunities for MSU's best economics students.

Hoover family helps Econ interns

Summer internships are hard to come by and even more difficult to pay for, but they play a critical role in the career development of students. Fortunately for four students in the Economics Scholars program, unrestricted funds from an alumnus allowed them to accept summer internships in Washington D.C., Beijing, China, and Montevideo, Uruguay.

Giving to MSU Economics

We encourage alumni to recall and renew their Michigan State University ties by donating to the Department of Economics. These gifts not only contribute to our ability to positively impact the lives of students but also assist in the preservation of high quality education for future Spartans.
