The MSU Department of Economics is pleased to announce that Russell Weinstein, Ph.D., has joined the department as the Frederick S. and Marilyn Marshall Addy Endowed Chair of Economics and an associate professor.
“I am excited to join the MSU Department of Economics for many reasons!” Professor Weinstein said. “The faculty are top research scholars, including many with research closely related to mine in the areas of labor, personnel, education, and econometrics. They are also committed teachers and a collegial group.”
He will be teaching a graduate course in labor economics and an EC 499 class focused on labor markets and education.
“I also am excited to join a department with such a robust and well-regarded Ph.D. and undergraduate program.”
His research focuses on labor economics and the economics of education, and factors that facilitate or hinder labor market success for individuals and communities.
“This research includes studying barriers to high-wage jobs for students based on the colleges they attend, and the impact of regional universities on their local labor markets,” he said. He is also a Research Fellow of the IZA Network at LISER in Luxembourg.
Weinstein’s work has been published in journals including the American Economic Journal: Applied Economics, Journal of Labor Economics, and the Review of Economics and Statistics. His research has been covered by The Harvard Business Review, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Inside Higher Ed, MarketWatch, and The Washington Post; and it has been referenced by the White House’s Economic Report of the President and the US Senate.
Weinstein was awarded an Early Career Research Award from the W.E. Upjohn Institute for Employment Research. He received his Ph.D. in Economics from Boston University in 2014, where he was a Dean's Fellow. He graduated with an A.B. degree in Economics magna cum laude from Harvard University.
When asked about his interests, he shared that he likes spending time outside and playing sports with his wife and three daughters. He also likes playing piano and listening to classical music.
