Presentation: The Transformation of the Electrical Grid: How Economics Shapes the Largest Machine in the West
The U.S. electrical grid is currently undergoing a historic transformation to accommodate alternative forms of electricity generation, each of which have different costs. Some of these costs are borne by utility customers, some by people living near generation sources, and some by the government. What are the economic forces that shape our grid? How do alternatives, including the status quo, determine pollution, reliability, and cost of electricity? This talk focuses on the economics of the grid, how markets play a role in the deployment of different generation technologies, and why there isn't a one-size-fits-all answer to our nation's energy needs. Along the way, we'll discuss how economic concepts like externalities and equilibrium shape the future of our grid.
